How a Functional Doctor Recovers From Injury

I was playing tennis with my tennis buddies (one of my favorite things to do). I turned quickly to go after a lob and POP! I felt this terrible pain in my calf. I didn’t want to admit it, but I had torn part of my calf muscle.

My first instinct was to rub some dirt on it and keep playing (I could hear my Dad in my head, “suck it up, Buttercup!”) but I realized that I better head home and do some quick first aid on myself. Here’s what I did:

  • Breathe – took deep breaths so that my mind didn’t take over with the “what if’s.”
  • Ice – grabbed some ice out of the freezer to ice my calf while elevating.
  • Distraction – distracted myself by watching The Bachelor with my daughters (seriously!).

The next morning I took a high dose Turmeric supplement and Andrographis supplement to decrease inflammation. I skipped the coffee and drank some turmeric milk (see recipe below) and added turmeric powder and black pepper on my fresh organic eggs.

I also took 10 minutes to do my favorite meditation app – Headspace (It’s free. Download it, you won’t be sorry!).

For the rest of my meals and snacks I made sure my food choices were super clean – no sugar especially – and tried to add extra vegetables to my plate, as well as other antioxidant-rich foods.

That night I poured some epsom salts in a bath and soaked my leg.

I should be back on the tennis court soon, but am allowing the turmeric and the rest to do it’s job with anti-inflammation.

Turmeric Milk

  • 2 cups of almond milk (homemade is the most delicious)
  • 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon local honey (to taste)

Mix all the ingredients together over medium heat except the honey. Do not allow it to boil. Add a bit of honey for taste and drink as soon as it is cool enough.
